The 68th Annual Gyro Days Lead Creek Derby will be on Saturday, June 20, 2009.

The Wallace Gyro Club is proud to present the 68th annual Lead Creek Derby and Fun Ride. Join us June 18-20 for Gyro Days 2009 The downhill ride follows the Lead Creek Ball down the South Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River to Historic Wallace. Derby ticket winners are those who match the time it takes the Ball to float from Mullan to Wallace.

    • 1st Prize is 100 real Silver Dollars

Riders are responsible for their own transportation to the start in Mullan which is 6 miles up river from Wallace (see aerial photos for directions). All proceeds go to the Gyro Scholarship Fund which provides scholarships to area students. Riders will follow the Gyro Speeder and the Ball downstream along the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes from Mullan to Wallace. The Speeder keeps the official time and makes sure that the Ball doesn't get stuck. When the Ball gets to Wallace, there is a carnival and great fun for everyone!

About 150 men, women, and children gather each year on the Summer Equinox, June 21, to "Bridge the Years - Ride the Wall." Riders normally range in age from about 8 to over 60. The route is about 15 miles long and includes both the paved Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes and an unpaved high forest road. This 11th annual benefit ride starts at 6 PM, SUNDAY, JUNE 21, 2009, at the Enaville Resort, located 1.5 miles up the beautiful Coeur d'Alene River from I-90 Exit 43, Kingston. Proceeds from entry fees will benefit the Silver Valley Habitat for Humanity and the Rose Lake Quick Response Unit. All participants receive commemorative shirts and free admission to the outdoor BBQ held after the ride. The registration form may be downloaded from the Habitat website at www.hfhidaho.org/bike_event.htm#bike.

The annual Huckleberry Festival in Wallace will be on Friday and Saturday, August 14-15, 2009. This year, a bicycle hill climb to the top of Dobson Pass on Saturday morning will be followed by a series of races through town ("criterium") in the afternoon. These new events are in addition to the traditional 5K Huckleberry Fun Run/walk Saturday morning, held each year in conjunction with a Huckleberry Pancake Breakfast. On both Friday and Saturday, the Depot lawn will be filled with food and craft vendors as usual. The bicycle races with their cash and other prizes will attract new bicycle visitors to historic Wallace, and serve as a fund raising event for the Friends of the Coeur d'Alenes.

The official event name is Huckleberry Festival Omnium. An omnium is a multi stage bike race in which the racers earn points based on their placings in each race. The racers total points combined from each race determine their placing in the overall, or Omnium. The rider with the most accumulated points wins the Omnium. An Omnium is different than say, the Tour de France, because the overall is based on points scored in each race rather than accumulated time as in the Tour.

The First Annual Dobson Pass Hill Climb is not for the faint of heart. This challenging 3 mile course will see road riders battle the formidable steeps of Dobson Pass with cash and prizes to category winners.

The First Annual Huckleberry Festival Criterium will feature the fastest racers in the Northwest. This "grand prix" style bicycle race will follow a course through Historic Downtown Wallace for lap after lap of high speed thrills with cash and prizes.

The Huckleberry Festival Omnium fact sheet provides racer categories, race times, cash prizes and medals. For the further information, EMAIL Steve Prokopiw or call him at (208) 556-0438.
